Quality Custom Exterior and Interior Doors
We build fine, custom interior and exterior doors. There is nothing more wonderful than a custom door made by a true craftsman that lasts for the life of the buyer, and beyond. A door handmade just for you exactly to your specifications to the highest quality standards is a rare thing these days.
Our doors are handmade using morise and tenon construction. An exterior door is best made from true mahogany. Since this wood is not readily available locally anymore, we use South American Mahogany, the next best choice.
The best grade of Mahogany is called "pattern" grade and this is what we use. This term comes from the days when the wood was used to make actual patterns for various uses. This grade has the least number of knots, has a very "clear" straight grain and is also the most stable. Stability is one of the most important things to consider when making doors. Since doors are not nailed down they have nothing to hold them to the shape you want. So, doors can change shape if only slightly and this can cause trouble. If a certain type of wood is subject to change or movement, then the door made with it will not fit the opening and can be a problem later. Door warping or even swelling can cause the door to bind against the jamb which damages the finish or worse. We use a good quality wood so the only other thing that can cause trouble is the finish. This is especially true for a south or west facing entry. The sun bakes the finish and basically wears it down over time. It can also bleach the color of the stain. We use only exterior grade with UV protecting finishes to be sure your door will last a lifetime.
There are many door styles – Full light, ¾ light, ½ light, semented arch with full light, to name a few. You will see a variety in the gallery.
All doors can have either leaded glass panels or solid wood panels. Typically, the upper panel opening would be used for leaded glass but that opening can be used for a solid wood panel also, We recommend that solid wood panels be limited to 12” wide. It really comes down to the style you, as the customer, want.
There are many extras for doors that we can also provide. Raised molding, flutted molding with rosettes, speak easy windows, sidelights and transoms. Thicker than normal doors can also be provided.
If you now have more questions than when you started, then you're learning. We have many years of experience in design, building and installing doors. We will be happy to talk to you and answer any questions you have about doors and leaded and stained glass.
